(Doro is thousands of years old and must kill people and adopt their bodies to remain alive.) The succesful results of his centuries-long attempts to create this race have been mixed. Doro, an immortal from the time of the Pharohs, has been attempting to breed a race of telepathics that can control the world. I am so very confused! ( )Ī fascinating and quite imaginative novel. Nothing about their telepathy intrigued me, but I awed at Emma's and Doro's ability.

I stuck with the book just to see what happens to Emma and Doro, and while I'm slightly curious to see the direction the rest of the series takes, I suspect I might not ever be too eager to read through them all.ĭid Butler intend for this reaction? She wrote the complicated relationship between Anyanwu and Doro so well in Wild Seed, but nearly all the Patternist characters-including Mary-felt so flat. If anything, I should sympathize with Mary, but I had come to know Doro so well. As it was, I found the constantly rotating narratives from such a wide variety of people (who weren't terribly distinct, all being Patternists) distracting and not at all sympathetic. Perhaps if I had read this first, in its order of publication, I would have enjoyed the book more. I think I became too invested in the characters of Anyanwu (Emma) and Doro in Wild Seed to fully appreciate this book. I can't get to 4 stars for a rating without some exploration of some of these types of themes- what's left is just a cool story. I think the story she's forming here cries out for more exploration of the ethical problems of enslaving normal people (or "mutes" as they're called here), but this is apparently not part of the project. Butler is a worthy read, though not at all my favorite sci-fi writer. Good world-building here, and I'm in for the rest of this series- the books are easy to read and economical. But as this happens she becomes a threat to the immortal and apparently invulnerable Doro. She binds people to her in "the pattern" and successfully builds toward her dream. Mary then starts to build her own community of people like her. But early on, she goes through her "transition" and instinctively locates and binds herself to six other active telepaths around the US who are also part of Doro's breeding program. She is a 19 year old powerful telepath, though still latent as the book begins. well it's not clear exactly what he's trying for. Doro has been alive for thousands of years, and through a breeding project is trying to create. Wild Seed told the story of Doro and Emma, two immortals with very different purposes. There are many Patternist casualties in the fight however, Mary is ultimately able to continue to grow and protect the Patternist society she has created.Book 2 of the Patternist series, though I believe the books were written out of order. With support from her people, Mary gains the strength to fight and ultimately kill Doro. This creates a conflict, as Mary will destroy herself and as a result all Patternists if she discontinues the expansion of her Patternist community.

Two years later, after Mary has added 1,500 people to her community of Patternists, Doro thinks Mary has acquired too much power and demands that she stop acquiring telepaths. In the midst of Mary's status change from a "latent" to an "active" telepath, she makes the first ever Pattern as a result of her attaching mentally onto six other active telepathic people. Doro's hope is that his daughter Mary will connect with other telepaths and ultimately become an exceptional telepath who is able to link with other telepathic people. The story is focused on one of Doro's daughters, named Mary, who is a young, poor biracial woman. Doro tends to procreate with and breed people who are telepathically sensitive, in an effort to make a group of superhuman telepaths. Since Doro does not have physical immortality, he must move his essence to different bodies as time goes on for his continued survival. Doro is about 4,000 years old and immortal. The leader of the telepathic humans that later became known as the Patternists, was a man originally from Africa named Doro. The novel is set in Forsyth, California, a city near Los Angeles, in the 1970s. This second novel in the series recounts the story of how the Patternist society originated.
